(Sun, March 23, 2025) Fundo de Quintal U.S Tour 2025 stops in Los Angeles at Catch One. The legendary samba group comes to the US to celebrate carnival and has schedules to stop also in New York, Boston, Miami, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Houston, before reaching California where the group will perform before going back to Brazil. Fundo de Quintal is Brazil’s most legendary samba band, formed in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s. Fundo de Quintal ‘s vitality and longevity are no secret and the recipe is simple: musical generosity. Many of the great icons, the giants of samba began their careers with Fundo de Quintal including Jorge Aragão, Sombrinha, Almir Guineto, Arlindo Cruz, Walter Sete Cordas, Cleber Augusto, Neoci, Mario Sérgio, and Ronaldinho.
(April 25-26/ May 2-4) 21 & Gira by Grupo Corpo from Brazil at Berkeley (April 25-26) and Los Angeles (May 2-4). Grupo Corpo, the renowned Brazilian dance company founded in 1975 by Paulo and Rodrigo Pederneiras, presents 21 & Gira. The program opens with 21, a ballet by Paulo Pederneiras that explores rhythmic combinations centered around the number 21, with music by Marco Antonio Guimarães. Gira delves into Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian religions, particularly Umbanda, transforming its rituals into a universal expression of humanity through trance-like movements.

(Nov 6 + Dec 14 + Jan 11) Star Party at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Santa Barbara. A clear, cloudless night can reveal countless galactic wonders. FREE event on the second Saturday of each month, the Palmer Observatory opens its doors to the public to use its state-of-the-art telescope. Join the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit and fellow star enthusiasts to learn about the night sky.
(Nov 14 – Jan 5) Rodeo Drive Holiday Light Celebration. FREE. Beverly Hills always adds a touch of star power to its Christmas lights — a stunning display that typically stretches for three blocks, from Wilshire Blvd. to Santa Monica Blvd. Opening night festivities will feature live performances and a fireworks display.
(Nov 15 – Jan 5) Lightscape, San Diego. Stroll through 1 million lights along a one-mile path at Encinitas’ 37-acre San Diego Botanic Garden. The walkways feature tunnels of light, lanterns, and illuminated California poppies. FREE.
(Nov 16 – Jan 12) Holidays at Filoli, Woodside. FREE. Explore this 1917 country estate on the San Francisco Peninsula, where a 54,000-square-foot house is adorned with 14 Christmas trees, and the 16-acre garden sparkles with 20 miles of lights. Check out the schedule of other holiday festivities, including drinks by the firepits, holiday teas, or tours inside the property.
(Nov 22 – Jan 5) Redding Garden of Lights, Redding (CA). Explore 10 acres of illuminated paths and nature-themed displays at the McConnell Botanical Gardens in Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Enjoy hot chocolate, s’mores by the fire, and glowing swings. Upgrade with a private igloo for up to eight people, featuring wood-fired pizzas and treats. Open Wednesday to Sunday. FREE.
(Nov 23 – Jan 6) Festival of Lights at the Mission Inn, Riverside. FREE. Each year, the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in downtown Riverside celebrates the season with extensive displays featuring over four million lights. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy the dazzling show, but staying is certainly tempting. Choose from packages that include dining credits, holiday treats from the local bakery, and even carolers singing outside your door.
(Sat/Sun, June 28-29) Santa Monica Pier Beach Festival, a FREE event for the whole family that celebrates the best of beach life with an awesome, all-ages festival! Expect ocean sports competitions, live music, food and drinks, interactive games, sampling by some of your favorite brands and so much more. Whether you’re hanging with the family, competing on land or at sea, or partying with your friends, this is an event not to be missed to join SoCA beach culture and at an iconic spot!
GENERAL EVENTS – WORTHY TO PAY
(Dec/Jan) Practice your Figure Skating Moves in the Spirity of Christmas in L.A and Santa Monica. Just because Southern California rarely gets to below-freezing temperatures doesn’t mean we’re lacking in outdoor ice skating venues. In downtown, Pershing Square has been offering skating for more than 25 years. The rink, flanked by a Christmas tree and the downtown skyline, is a large 7,200 square feet. DJs on most Thursdays, classical music on Sundays and three mornings (Dec. 21, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4) where guests can learn to curl. The curling training sessions are $25 per person. In Santa Monica this yea, hosting Ice at Santa Monica is sponsored by Disney+. The rink runs through Jan. 20, is is located at the corner of Arizona Avenue and 5th Street. There is also a smaller rink for children. Sundays through Thursdays, with hours varying by day and sessions starting at $22.
(Most evenings through Jan. 5, 2025) Stroll Through a Magical Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada. The gardens and manicured woodlands of Descanso Gardens will glow once again for the now-annual event “Enchanted Forest of Light,” an evening stroll that aims to enhance the natural awe of nature. Walk among the grounds and encounter twinkling tulips, dazzling stained glass houses from sculptor Tom Fruin, and light installations that hang from towering oak trees, bathing guests in a cozy calmness. Adult tickets for non-members range from $22 to$45. Children’s non-member tickets are $17 to $30.
(Fri to Sun, Jan 9-12) Animé Los Angeles 20 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Last year’s arcade-themed blowout drew more than 17,000 costumed folks to the Long Beach Convention Center. With an international array of artists, musicians, and even souped-up cars taking over the sprawling convention space, this annual event is a big draw for fans of nearly every aspect of Japanese anime culture. This year’s theme is “Historical”: Expect a cosplay masquerade, industry panels, a fashion show, an exhibit and art hall, and extremely bright colors. Single-day presale tickets start at $35; $40 at the door.
(Wed, May 28th to Sun, June 1st, 2025) L.A Latino International Film Festival. Various locations in Los Angeles including FREE events. The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival is a premier platform dedicated to championing Latino filmmakers, elevating their work and facilitating growth, with a special focus on U.S. Latino filmmakers. Through film, television, and music. Opened submissions for films and episodics will open on Friday, Nov 1, 2024, and close on Sunday, Feb 2, 2025.
CALIFORNIA FREE SUMMER FUN
Every Summer one of the greatest things in California is the Free Outdoor and Indoor Music Series in different venues/locations in the golden state – live music and dance FREE to the public is offered during the whole summer every year. Here bellow we cover mostly of these events in Southern California – or at least the best ones!
Twilight on the Pier in Santa Monica – It has been a Southern California tradition for over twenty years. After severe storms damaged the Pier in 1983, the newly formed Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation and the Santa Monica Arts Commission decided to put together a series of concerts to raise awareness about the restoration project and build community spirit. Putting together a small amount of seed money to start the event, the City staged the first concerts under a large blue and white tent dubbed “The La Monica” after the ballroom that graced the Pier from the late 1930s to the early 1960s. Long-time friend of the Pier Katharine King named the concerts as “Twilight Dance Series” that now is knowing as “The Twilight on the Pier” – www.santamonicapier.org.
The Summer Sessions Free Outdoor Concert at the Getty Center in L.A – Each year the series presents a diverse lineup of musical talents, many of whom mix and match musical traditions and genres. The series showcased a myriad of musical styles, from hip-hop, blues, and rock, to Latin boogaloo, Afro-Peruvian jazz, Mexican cabaret, merengue, electronic beats, Indian rhythms, and even Algerian trance music. All concerts are free and no reservations are needed. Concerts take place from 6:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center. www.getty.edu
Summer Series Culver City Music Festival – The Culver City re-development agency and the City of Culver City Presents every year the Annual Culver City Summer Sunset Music Festival. Listen to a mix of Jazz, Samba, Bluegrass, 60’s Rock and World Music at the Culver City Hall Courtyard. Bring a blanket, chairs and a picnic basket and get ready to dance the night away with your family and friends! Summer Series at Fisherman’s Village – Located in beautiful Marina Del Rey in L.A area, Fisherman’s Village offers Saturday concerts from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Summer Series at Burton Chace Park – The Free Marina del Rey Summer Concerts are held in a beautiful waterside setting at Burton Chace Park. The series features Thursday evening classical concerts showcasing the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony, with Frank Fetta, conductor and guest soloists. On alternate weeks, Saturday pop concerts star celebrated musical entertainers. You are welcome to bring a picnic basket full of your favorite foods! Summer Series at Pershing Square – Pershing Square is an outdoor concert and event center located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. It hosts an array of free programs for the downtown community such as Swingin’ Wednesday, Lunchtime Concerts and Salsa Sundays. Summer Series at Levitt Pavilion – Stretch out on cool grass on a warm summer evening, gaze up at the stars and listen to an amazing kaleidoscope of music in the peaceful setting of Memorial Park in Old Pasadena. Hear welcomed sounds flowing from most beautiful band shell on the West Coast and – it’s all free! Summer Series at Japanese American National Museum – Located in Little Tokyo near Downtown Los Angeles, the Japanese American National Museum is proud to present the 1st & Central Summer Concerts. Enjoy an array of diverse cultural music as the mission of the museum is to promote cross-cultural diversity and understanding. Reservations are required for all programs and seating is limited. Summer Series at California Plaza – Grand Performances presents free performing arts that reflect the best of global culture and inspire community among the diverse peoples of Los Angeles. Located at California Plaza in the heart of the Financial District in Downtown Los Angeles, this spectacular venue hosts an eclectic group of talented artists from all over the world. City of Beverly Hills “Summer Nights” – The city of Beverlly Hills offer the Concerts on Canon summer season which kicks off in 2024 with Pride Night! Pride Night featured artists Boyish and Yancyabril are from Music Forward Foundation’s LGBTQ+ Emerging Artists Award program. Custom poems will also be created for guests, courtesy of Brian Sonia-Wallace and the Pride Poets! Visit their website www.beverlyhills.org Thursdays, June 6 through August 22, 6pm-8pm.
City of Manhattan Beach “Concerts in the Park” (Polliwog Park) – Open seating and free to the public. There are no dogs, barbecues or wheeled vehicles allowed at any time in the concert area. Your cooperation to keep our parks clean is appreciated. Visit their website www.manhattanbeach.
City of Hermosa Beach Sunset Concerts – The Hermosa Beach Concert Series will debut in 2024, repositioning the City’s 25-year tradition of free concerts on the beach.
