Canoa Quebrada evolved from a remote fishing village into an internationally recognized beach destination.
My initial interest in Brazil began with a place located in the state of Ceará, in the Northeastern region of the country. The former fisherman village, discovered by hippies in the 1970s, has transformed into a destination that not only boasts natural beauty, but also offers hospitality, diverse accommodations, artisan culture, and rich experiences.

- Traditional raft (jangada) excursions offer scenic rides and stories from local fishermen
- For thrill-seekers, buggy rides across the dunes deliver adrenaline

Sunset Views and Vibrant Nights
One unforgettable highlight is the sunset from the top of a sand dune — one of the most iconic and photographed moments in the region.
At night, the energy shifts to the famous “Broadway” street, where visitors experience:
- A mix of Reggae, Forró, Rock, and Electronic music
- A wide selection of bars and restaurants
- Regional and international cuisine

Origin of the Name
Canoa Quebrada’s history dates back to 1650, when Portuguese navigator Francisco Aires da Cunha was sent by King Dom Manuel to explore Brazil’s northeastern coast.
After shipwrecking on Ponta Grossa beach, he reached a fishing village where locals helped him. Since then, the area became known as “Canoa Quebrada” (Broken Canoe).
In the 1980s, its remote access — only reachable by 4×4 vehicles — attracted Europeans and hippies, helping shape its international reputation.
Nearby Must-See Destination
Another remarkable attraction in eastern Ceará is Morro Branco beach, located in the municipality of Beberibe — a must-visit for travelers exploring the region.
