Luiz Melodia by Daryan Dornelles 1emailThe Los Angeles Tribute to Luiz Melodia will honor the memory of the legendary Brazilian singersongwriter Luiz Melodia, who passed away on August 4, 2017, with two cornerstone tribute concerts on Thursday, March 22 at 9 pm at The Blue Whale in downtown Los Angeles and Saturday, March 24 at 9 pm at Zebulon Café.

Guitarist, singer-songwriter, and arranger Renato Piau (Ithamara Koorax, Tim Maia, Chico Anísio), Melodia’s artistic partner and music director for decades, is traveling from Brazil to be part of the weeklong celebration and will perform at both events, with a dream team of artists performing at each concert.

Melodies from Melodia, a semi-acoustic tribute will take place on Thursday, March 22 at 9 pm at the Blue Whale (Weller Court Plaza 3rd floor, 123 Astronaut E S Onizuka St. Suite 301, Los Angeles, 90012). Tickets are $20. The program will be music-directed by guitarist and keyboardist Mika Mutti (Sergio Mendes, Jamie Foxx) and will feature guitarist, singersongwriter, and arranger Renato Piau; bassist John Leftwich (Carmen McRae, Dizzy Gillespie); cellist Artyom Manukyan (Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-DMC, Tigran Hamasyan, Armenian Navy Band with Arto Tuncboyaciyan); and drummer and percussionist Mike Shapiro (, Justin Timberlake, Sergio Mendes).

The second concert tribute will take place on Saturday, March 24 at 9 pm at Zebulon Café (2478 Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles, 90039). Tickets are $20. The show will be music-directed by guitarist and arranger Denys Cristian. The program will feature singers Thalma de Freitas (Kamasi Washington, Orquestra Imperial); Carla Hassett (“Rio,” Sergio Mendes, Billy Idol); Emina Shimanuki (MôForró, Samba Society, Viver Brasil 20 at the Ford Theatres); and Jessica Jeza Vautor (performed with Fall Frett, resident performer at the Blue Whale).

The band will be guitarist, singer-songwriter, and arranger Renato Piau; percussionist Steve Thornton (Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock); percussionist Léo Costa (Sergio Mendes, “Rio”); pianist Mika Mutti (Sergio Mendes, John Legend); saxophonist Randal Fisher (Ethio Cali); bassist André de Sant’anna (Jason Mraz and Sergio Mendes); percussionist Gibi Dossantos (Viver Brasil, Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira); and violinist, mandolinist, and composer Ted Falcon (Jambrosia, Gypsy Jazz Club, recorded with Suzanne.
