On my last backpacking trip through Brazil, before heading north to the Brazilian Northeast, I made a meaningful stop in Brasília, where I reunited with an old friend, Andrea.
After a couple of days exploring the capital, Andrea, her two daughters, and I set out on a road trip to discover one of Brazil’s most charming and lesser-known destinations: Pirenópolis.
Located about 150 km (93 miles) from Brasília and 120 km (75 miles) from Goiânia, Pirenópolis is a beautifully preserved colonial town surrounded by mountains, rivers, and an impressive concentration of waterfalls.
With just over 20,000 residents, the town sits 800 meters (2,600 feet) above sea level, right in the geographical heart of Brazil.
A Colonial Town Rich in History and Tradition
Founded more than 300 years ago, Pirenópolis preserves an architectural heritage that reflects Brazil’s colonial past.
Among its historic landmarks are the iconic churches:
• Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário
• Igreja do Bonfim
These buildings showcase Portuguese colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and colorful facades that transport visitors to another era.
One of the town’s most important cultural celebrations is the traditional Festa do Divino Espírito Santo.
Celebrated annually for more than 250 years, the festival takes place about 50 days after Easter—usually in May—and includes:
• religious ceremonies
• vibrant street processions
• traditional music and dance
The highlight of the event is the spectacular Cavalhadas, a dramatic horseback reenactment of medieval battles between Moors and Christians.
Lifestyle, Artisans, and Local Flavor
Tourism is the main driver of Pirenópolis’ economy, along with cattle farming, limestone extraction, and artisan jewelry production.
Local craftsmen are particularly known for their handmade silver jewelry, which can be found in small boutique shops throughout the historic center.
At night, the town comes alive on Rua do Lazer, a pedestrian street filled with restaurants, bars, and artisan shops.
The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic, attracting visitors who enjoy:
• live music
• regional cuisine
• cozy outdoor dining
• handmade crafts
The vibe is simple yet enchanting—part rustic village, part bohemian retreat.
Outdoor Adventures in Brazil’s “Waterfall Paradise”
For nature lovers and adventure travelers, Pirenópolis is a dream destination.
The region offers outdoor activities such as:
• hiking through Cerrado landscapes
• horseback riding
• mountain biking
• fishing
• zip-lining and canopy tours
Often called “Brazil’s Waterfall Paradise,” the area boasts more than 70 waterfalls scattered across three mountain ranges:
• Morro do Pedro
• Morro dos Macacos
• Serra dos Pireneus
Just a short drive from Brasília, Pirenópolis reveals itself as one of Brazil’s most charming hidden gems.
