The capoeirista and percussionist Gibi is another talent of the “Terra da Magia” or Magic Land (a term given by the own “baianos”) in California. He was exposed to the rich heritage of capoeira and its traditional music since when still a little boy in his native Salvador.
He followed on to study many other Brazilian styles and art forms, receiving international recognition in the world of capoeira. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1998 brought by his brother, “Meia-Noite”, who already lived in L.A and played in the Sergio Mendes band.
Gibi becomes part of Sergio’s band a few years later, in 2008, and since then he travels worldwide. The multi-talented baiano has contributed to all Sergio’s albums since 2008 including Grammy-winning album “Bom Tempo”. He has also performed and toured also with Airto Moreira, as well as Viver Brazil Dance Company.
Gibi has played and recorded with artists such as Kanye West, Enrique Iglesias, Alex Acunha, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Kendrick Lamar. He has participated in the Oscar’s nominated soundtrack of the motion picture “RIO” and the mobile game “Angry Birds.” – www.gibidossantos.com
