The Brazilian musician, a native of Fortaleza in Brazil’s Northeast region, arrived in San Diego in 2003 with a simple goal: to learn English, like many middle-class Brazilians.

However, after just a couple of months, his plans changed.

Instead of returning to Brazil, he chose to stay in California and pursue what had always been part of his life — his dream of becoming a professional musician.

A Life Rooted in Music

“I have been a musician since 1990, and many members of my family play some type of musical instrument,” said Cyro Abreu.

He plays several percussion instruments, but his main instrument is the tantan — a key element in samba and pagode music, responsible for maintaining rhythm and groove.

His deep connection with Brazilian music reflects both family influence and years of dedication to his craft.

Musical Journey and Collaborations

Over the years, Cyro has had the honor of performing with well-known Brazilian bands in San Diego, including:

  • Samba Chopps
  • Grupo Resenha

These experiences helped him strengthen his presence in the local Brazilian music scene and expand his artistic network.

Gambiarra: Celebrating Brazilian Rhythms Abroad

Cyro Abreu is also the founder of Gambiarra, a Brazilian band created to showcase the diversity of Brazil’s musical culture.

Founded in October 2018, the group performs a wide range of rhythms, including:

  • Samba
  • Pagode
  • Sertanejo
  • Axé

“We started the band in October 2018. We are well organized and doing great things,” said Cyro.

Today, Gambiarra continues to grow and represents a vibrant piece of Brazil in Southern California.  Instagram: @GambiarraSD
