A chance encounter with Brazilian fashion transformed Lisa Neary’s photography career
Photography had always been my passion, but I never imagined it would lead me into the exciting world of fashion.
At the beginning of 2014, after retiring from Caesars Entertainment, I opened a small portrait studio in Las Vegas, specializing in family photography. I was enjoying this new chapter of my life when an unexpected opportunity completely changed my professional journey.
A group of friends invited me to photograph model rehearsals for a major runway fashion show.
During those rehearsals, I met renowned Brazilian fashion designer Aldo Mencatto, who had recently established his career in Las Vegas.
That encounter would redefine my path as a photographer.
After seeing my work, Aldo invited me to continue photographing the rehearsals and to assist backstage during the Blue Party Runway Fashion Show, held at the Las Vegas World Market Center.
Until then, I had never considered myself capable of working in fashion photography—one of the industry’s most demanding specialties.
Aldo believed otherwise.
He encouraged me, shared valuable advice and became an informal mentor, helping me understand how I could continue developing my skills and confidence behind the camera.
A new creative opportunity
More recently, hairstylist Val Cetaj, whom I had met during the fashion show, invited me to photograph one of her newest hairstyle collections in my studio.
The photo session featured Brazilian model Ellen Alves, former Miss Brazil-USA Nevada (2011–2012) and now the pageant’s director, wearing several of Aldo Mencatto’s elegant runway and red-carpet gowns.
I immediately accepted the opportunity.
Although I had photographed models before, I had never worked with someone as talented, professional and engaging as Ellen.
Six hours of creativity

The complete production—including hairstyling, makeup and photography—lasted more than six hours.
Throughout the entire session, Ellen remained energetic, positive, patient and encouraging.
When she stepped in front of the camera, she transformed every image with her confidence and natural charisma.
Val’s creative hairstyles, Ellen’s elegance and Aldo’s timeless fashion designs combined to create an unforgettable experience.
I simply had the privilege of capturing it all through my lens.
Although I know I still have much to learn as a photographer, I also know I would never have progressed this far without Aldo Mencatto’s encouragement, patience and generous mentorship.
Learning from the Brazilian community
Perhaps the greatest lesson wasn’t about photography at all. It was about people. Working alongside Aldo, Ellen and many other members of the Brazilian community in Las Vegas showed me something truly special.
I witnessed how they welcomed both Brazilians and non-Brazilians with the same generosity, encouragement and willingness to help others grow.
Their optimism, warmth and determination to pursue their dreams while supporting one another left a lasting impression on me.
Gratitude for every new opportunity
Today, I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences that photography has brought into my life.
This journey reminded me that sometimes the greatest opportunities arrive when we least expect them—and that mentorship, kindness and gratitude can be just as transformative as talent.
