The Brazilian Spotlight is an evening celebration of Brazilian cinema and culture, and will screen the North American premiere of these respective film.

Silvio tells the incredible true story of how Silvio Santos, one of Brazil’s greatest media icons, tries to convince his kidnapper to free him and his family. In August 2001, Silvio was kept hostage in his own house by Fernando Dutra Pinto, the very same kidnapper who, hours earlier, released Silvio’s daughter Patrícia from a week-long captivity. Still shaken by his daughter’s kidnapping, Silvio has to convince Fernando to give himself up.

He tries to accomplish that by telling Fernando about his humble beginnings and the journey that led him to become Brazil’s most beloved personality. Fiction and reality mix in a narrative of overcoming obstacles, victories, questions, and mistakes that slowly impact Fernando’s decisions. Silvio bets everything on gaining Fernando’s trust and takes control of the negotiations with the police to help for a better outcome. This tense drama is directed by Marcelo Antunez and stars Rodrigo Faro in the titular role supported by Johnnas Oliva as his captor Fernando.
