By 2011, Brazil’s Secretary of Foreign Relations estimated over 1 million Brazilians living in the U.S.
For generations, Brazilians have looked to the United States as a land of opportunity, chasing the ever-alluring “American Dream.” This migration trend began modestly in the 1960s but surged in the 1980s and 1990s. By 2011, Brazil’s Secretary of Foreign Relations estimated over 1 million Brazilians living in the U.S. – a community that has only grown in diversity and influence.
Where Brazilians Call Home in the U.S.
The largest Brazilian populations are on the East Coast, particularly in New York/New Jersey, Southern Florida, Boston metropolitan area, and Southern California – San Diego to Los Angeles, where Soul Brasil Media is based, and Brazilian community is alive and thriving! However, Brazilians have also established vibrant communities in Dallas and Houston (Texas), and Atlanta (Georgia). In the early 2000s, many Californians of Brazilian origin relocated to new growth areas such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City, especially as Las Vegas’ economy boomed. Yet no matter how much they adapt to the fast-paced American lifestyle, Brazilians rarely lose their deep connection to their homeland and its rich culture.
From Magazine to Full-Fledged Brazilian Media
When Soul Brasil launched in June 2002, it was a bilingual print magazine distributed in over 120 locations across California — including the Brazilian Consulates in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Back then — in the pre-social media era — Soul Brasil quickly became a cultural touchstone for both Brazilians and Americans curious about Brazil’s music, cuisine, travel, and lifestyle. For the first ten years, we released a 10,000-copy print edition every two months, later expanding in 2012 to 15,000 copies and reaching Las Vegas.
Going Digital Without Losing Our Roots
In 2017, after 15 years of free printed distribution in over 220 locations, Soul Brasil embraced a digital-first strategy — but never abandoned print. Today, we continue publishing a premium print edition every other month – printed on demand, while producing daily bilingual content for our website, video content for social media, and coverage of Brazilian events across Southern Calfiornia
Our platform now includes:
- Bilingual website with over 3,000 articles in English and Portuguese, and growing.
- Videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
- Event coverage and a constantly updated calendar featuting Brazilian events and FREE events in general.
- Travel tips, lifestyle features bridging both cultures, and a session on the art of living and spirituality – which since 2002 has been one of the priorities and “flagship” of our editorial line.
We were also the first Brazilian media outlet in the U.S. to actively promote the Go Green movement, encouraging environmental awareness and sustainable living.
2020 Onwards: Soul Brasil’s Next Chapter
