Seeing Marta play live was a dream come true for a young Brazilian soccer fan in America

Covering a professional women’s soccer match was my first experience attending a live game as a member of the press. I felt extremely nervous because it would also be my first time interviewing professional players. I arrived at the BMO Stadium and headed directly to the press box to watch the match between Angel City FC and Orlando Pride.

The game was especially meaningful because it marked Marta’s 100th appearance with Orlando Pride, the Florida-based club where the Brazilian superstar currently plays in the United States. More than 18,000 fans attended the exciting and competitive match.

As a Brazilian boy born and raised in Los Angeles who has played soccer since the age of 2, seeing Marta play live was unforgettable. Her passes, vision, and dribbling skills were simply phenomenal.

Marta Continues Her Legacy in the United States

Today, Marta continues to play professionally in the U.S. with Orlando Pride, one of the leading clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The Brazilian icon remains one of the biggest names in women’s soccer and continues inspiring new generations of athletes around the world.

Once the match ended, I was very happy that Orlando won because I had been cheering for Marta the entire game. I then went to the media conference room to listen to interviews with the coaches and players. We still needed approval from Orlando Pride for our interview with Marta.

When Marta finally arrived, I was completely shocked and emotional. She greeted me warmly, and we immediately started speaking in Portuguese.

Exclusive Interview with Marta

Marta: “How are you? Are we going to talk in Portuguese? Enzo, pleasure to meet you.”

Enzo: “Hi. Can I ask you some questions?”

Marta: “Of course.”

USA Soccer vs. Brazilian Soccer

Enzo: “How do you compare the USA’s soccer style versus Brazil?”

The Brazilian style is more technical, while U.S. soccer brings intensity and physicality, according to Marta.

Marta: “Well, both female and male, but more visible in the female teams here, there is more intensity and physicality. On the other hand, the Brazilian style is more technical and sophisticated. But some mix is happening lately, and U.S. soccer is becoming more beautiful.”

Her answer reflects how women’s soccer in the United States has evolved technically while maintaining its strong physical identity.

Olympics, Pressure and Experience

Enzo: “Are you planning to play next year in the Olympics?”

Marta: “Look, I am planning to play, but many things are out of my control. It depends on the coach and if they would select me, if I would be playing well on my team. Usually, what you do in your club reflects if you will be selected for the national team. So I have to work hard, continue to train, practice, and take care of myself.”

Enzo: “Do you have any player that makes you nervous to play against?”

Marta: “No. With all these years and my experience, you gain confidence. Usually, I am nervous before every game, but when the ball rolls, I feel relaxed and calm.”

Marta’s Pregame Routine

Enzo: “What kind of music do you listen to before a game?”

Marta: “When I play for Orlando, the players usually put American music in the locker room, and I enjoy the vibe because it helps us get excited for the match. When I’m with the national team, we listen to Brazilian music like forró, sertanejo, pagode, and everything mixed together.”

Enzo: “And what food do you eat before a game?”

Marta: “I usually eat a lot of pasta, carbohydrates, and protein like chicken and beef. Pasta is my typical pregame meal.”

Marta’s Future After Soccer

Enzo:“When you stop playing soccer, do you plan to become the national team’s coach?”

Marta: “I can’t say yes because it has to happen naturally. But I always plan to stay involved in the sport, share my experience and story, and help develop young athletes — boys and girls.”

Advice for Young Soccer Players

Enzo: “Do you have any advice for young players who want to pursue this career?”

Marta: “First of all, the player has to have self-confidence and believe it is possible. The player should give their best during practice because that reflects how they will perform in games. You can get great opportunities if you train well. So you must dedicate yourself all the time and have discipline.”

Her message about confidence, discipline, and hard work continues to resonate with young athletes worldwide.

An Unforgettable Experience

At the end of the interview, Marta hugged me and complimented the questions I asked. I felt beyond grateful and happy to meet such a legendary soccer icon. Marta is a true role model, and I will carry this experience in my heart forever.

Lastly, I would like to thank Angel City FC, Orlando Pride, and Kids Scoop Media for making this dream come true — and especially Marta, one of the greatest female soccer players of all time.
