The history of this magnificent project, what you can find and, in the case of artists, how to get more information to exhibit at Sala Vinicius de Moraes inside the Brazilian Consulate is here. In 2005, the consulate through an initiative of then Rio ambassador Thereza Quintella, inaugurated the project “Brazilian Consulate Gallery”.
The objective of the project was to expose the works of Brazilian artists based in its jurisdiction, in this case, the states of Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and part of California – which includes the counties of Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura, remembering that a second Brazilian Consulate in the golden state is located in San Francisco.
At that time and in the years that followed, the “Brazilian Consulate Gallery” project exposed works of several artists based in that jurisdiction, including potters, painters, artisans, and photographers. During that time, Americans, foreigners in general, and Brazilians who visited the consulate for some reason could see the works of these Brazilian artists displayed in a rotating format, on several walls of the third floor where the consulate is located, on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills.
Ten years later, in 2015, the General Consulate of Brazil in Los Angeles moved, within the same building, to occupy the entire third floor of that respective building. And with this change, the “Brazilian Consulate Gallery” started to occupy an exclusive room for events and exhibitions — the Vinícius de Moraes room. In this new phase and through this exclusive cultural space, it is possible to see works of many artists involved with the Brazilian community such as ceramist Sandra Zebi, photographer Jorge Vismara, artesian Rose Lobo, and many others.
The gallery’s initial idea created wings and with the opening of the Vinicius de Moraes room, it gained an additional tool for dissemination of Brazilian culture through other art forms, such as music, where bossa nova and jazz won space. Through the Vinicius de Moraes room, some of these musicians living in Southern California and some guests showed their talent, as was the case with Dori Caymmi, Fabiano do Nascimento, Bruno Mangueira, JP Mourão, and Luis Mascaro among others.
In addition to cultural promotion, the room is also used by the Brazilians Assistance Sector, which makes it available for possible meetings with the community, as was the case of the lecture on earthquake prevention promoted by the Southern California Citizens Council that serves to support the Consulate and acts, in part, as a communication channel between the Consulate General of Los Angeles and the Brazilian community.
