A musical event celebrating Brazilian music, art, culture, and community. This year, they are celebrating women’s contributions to Brazil musical history. It will be an evening of music and poetry by legendary Brazilian artists: from Chiquinha Gonzaga to Rita Lee.
“A Night of Áláfià” started in 2013 when they started a vocal/choir group as part of their continuous goal to empower individuals through educational and cultural projects. This group is made of individuals who may or may not have any background in performing but have taken on the challenge to experience something new. Kana Shimanuki has been the director of the group since then and after the success of their first performance, they decided to produce this event on a bigger stage in 2016.
This year, they have the pleasure and the honor of having Los Angeles based, Brazilian singer, Kátia Moraes. Without a doubt, she will bring her magic to the stage to share with all of you! For more information about Kátia Moraes, visit her website.
The event music director and world-renowned singer Kana Shimanuki will also be performing. This year, two fantastic musicians, JP Mourão and Felipe Fraga, will be playing with Kana and opening the night with songs composed or performed by some of her favorite female Brazilian artists.
Part of the proceedings of this event ($1,000) will also benefit the music program at the São Domingos Municipal School in the community of Del Castilho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. You can see information about the São Domingos Municipal school, including videos of the children in their music program using instruments donated by the Inner Empowerment Center by clicking here.
