Drummer, composer and educator Ana Barreiro grew up in Poços de Caldas, state of Minas Gerais, where she started playing drums at the age of 12. She became a drummer by taking lessons and playing at her church. After a couple of years studying music in Sao Paulo at Conservatório Souza Lima, she moved to Boston to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Drum Performance at Berklee College of Music. Barreto then moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California.
Since moving to L.A, Ana has had the opportunity to work with artists both in the Jazz and Brazilian music industry such as Catina de Luna, Lado B Brazilian Project, Otmaro Ruiz, Carol Bach-y-Rita, Andrea Motis, Thalma de Freitas, Amy K Bormet, Elizabeth Lamers, Scott Hamilton and Pasquale Grasso. Barreiro co-leads the group “AmyAna” with pianist Amy K Bormet. Their debut self-titled album was released in 2018 with compositions by both musicians leading “AmyAna” to become a finalist at the DC Jazz PrIX in 2019 in Washington DC.
In 2020 Barreiro was commissioned to write three solo drum-set pieces for the American Contemporary Ballet. She performed with the company and got great reviews. In 2021 her quintet was invited to perform in NYC for The Next Faces of Jazz series at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The Brazilian dummer has been using her home studio to record and teach remotely since 2021. She´s part of the Faculty at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood teaching at the Institutions Bachelors program and at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
