The 26th Newport Beach Film Festival or NBFF will spotlight the Southern California premiere of Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” (O Agente Secreto), by director Kleber Mendoça Filho, featuring Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Candido and Gabriel Leone, followed by a Gala celebration of latino film, food and culture on Monday, October 20, 2025. The already traditional Brazilian Spotlight is part of the International Showcase that also features films from Australia, Germany, Swiss, Italy, and Mexico, among others.

The Brazilian film is setting in Recife, Brazil, in 1977, during the height of the military dictatorship. The Secret Agent follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a technology expert who seeks refuge and reunites with his son during Carnival in Recife, only to find the city is more violent and dangerous than expected. The film, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, blends historical context with thrilling mystery as Marcelo becomes entangled in the oppressive atmosphere of Brazil’s military dictatorship and joins an underground resistance movement.

“The Festival is exceptionally proud to showcase such strong Brazilian cinema,” stated Gregg Schwenk, CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival. “We look forward to presenting compelling contemporary works of Brazilian filmmakers and hosting a sensational event that celebrates Brazilian art and culture.”
