i005 In March 2012 Brasília officially launched its candidacy to host the 8th World Water Forum, the most important event relating to the conscientious use of the world’s water resources. From 21st to 23rd August, four executives will come to Brasília to appraise the infrastructure and services of the city to host the forum in 2018.

The World Water Forum brings together researchers, specialists and authorities from 147 countries, totaling approximately 35,000 visitors to the country. The topics debated during the event relate to alternatives for the rational and sustainable use of water.

The proposed venues for the World Water Forum in 2018 are; The Convention Centre, the Mané Garrincha National Stadium, and the Expo Centre. During the three day event, international representatives will also experience the hospitality, cultural and tourism offering of the capital city. The council members will hold meetings with the Governor of the Federal District, Agnelo Queiroz, the Minister of the Environment, Izabella Teixeira, and parliamentarians from the environmental commission of the National Congress and the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District.

The Federal Authorities and the Federal District reached an agreement in 2012, during the sixth World Water Forum in Marseille, France. At this, the viability and advantages of holding the event in Brazil, and in Brasília in particular, were discussed by authorities, organizations, regulatory agencies, and Brazilian and international companies.

The volume of fresh water in Brazil, which amounts to 12% of the world’s total, Brazilian legislation and a well-structured sector with policies and practices of water resources management, are all positive features of the Brazilian candidacy. An awareness of the need for action for the conservation, protection, development, planning, management and efficient use of water, is increasing within Brazilian society and in the technical, political, academic and private sectors.

Brasília, the country’s capital and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, stands out due to its political importance and its architecture. Situated between three of the country’s largest catchment basins, the city meets all the logistical and operational requirements for staging the event.

If the candidacy for 2018 is successful, Brazil will be the first country in Latin America to host the event. The countries originally competing to host the Forum in 2018 were Brazil/Brasília, Russia/Moscow, Qatar/Doha and Denmark/ Copenhagen, however only the candidacies of Brasília and Copenhagen were accepted. The host cities of the World Water Forum in the past have been Istanbul (2009), Mexico City (2006), Kyoto (2003), The Hague (2000) and Marrakesh (1997). The 2015 World Water Forum will be held in Daegu, South Korea.
