The coastal city in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina is a popular tourist destination for South Americans, who are drawn to its main ocean boulevard Avenida Atlântica (Atlantic Avenue), and who swell the city’s population from around 150k (2020 census office estimate) to over one million during the main months of summer, in this case, December to February in Brazil.
The popularity is easy to explain: a restless nightlife and an interesting mix of beaches, like the trending Laranjeiras, the quiet Praia dos Amores and Praia de Itapema as well as Praia do Pinho, one of the first in the country to open for nudism. A tour in the cableway round Unipraias Park passing through some of the local symbols, like Cristo Luz, a bright statue of Christ the Redeemer standing at the top of Morro da Cruz, is also in point.
Most recently, the city has started being called the “Brazilian Dubai”, due to its high number of skyscrapers and affluent tourists. Balneario Camboriu is located 10 km (6.2 miles) south of the city of Itajai, 98km (60 miles) south of the city of Joinville, and 80 km (50 miles ) north of the state capital, Florianopolis. The city is served by Ministro Victor Konder International Airport located in the adjoining municipality of navegantes.
Forbes Magazine published a story in february 2012 about the ascent of electronic music in Brazil, and Balneário Camboriú was presented as the country’s “capital of e-music”. According to the same americana media group, Balneário Camboriú is the home to the two best clubs in Brazil.
The Green Valley, established in 2007, an award winning nightclub is considered to be not only one of Brazil’s very best, but has also been recognized by DJ Mag as one of the coolest nightclubs in the world; and the Space B. Camboriú, established in 2012 that occupies an area of 158k square meters, can accommodate for up to 4k people, and have 3 dance floors dedicated to dance music with 11 bars, backstage, lounge areas, food court area and cabins – it was the first Space franchise in the Americas .
