The “Celebration 4”, an annual show created and produced by singer and composer Kátia Moraes paying homage to renowned artists from Brazil, this time brings to Los Angeles the music of singer/songwriter Noel Rosa (1910-1936). The show encapsulates Noel’s repertoire of more than 250 songs with some of the most important hits recorded by the artist and covered by a multitude of talented successors, including Tom Jobim, Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Djavan, among many others.

Noel Rosa was a composer and singer of sambas who died, at 26, in Rio de Janeiro in 1937 and is revered today as the poetic genius of the Golden Age of Samba. In “Noel Rosa, a Celebration,” actor/singer Katia Moraes together with actor/poet Peter Lownds and accompanied by guitarist Mitchell Long and a percussionist, recreate Noel’s bittersweet life through his music, sung in Portuguese by Katia and translated into English by Peter. The songs illuminate scenes from Noel’s turbulent and humorous life – Three Penny Opera of Rio in the Radio Age with hustlers, poets and hoodlums all vividly brought to life by the talented trio of musicians, Peter and dancer Ana Carla Laidley playing a 1930’s Rio de Janeiro bohemian malandro.

“I used to live next to Vila Isabel, a neighborhood nearby where I have lived with my parents in Rio, and the spot in my native Rio where I heard and saw the Choro and Samba bands for the first time.  My parents would always play LPs recorded by Aracy de Almeida singing Noel on the turntable. My family and I lived a very happy life then and we didn’t know. That’s why Noel Rosa and Vila Isabel are import to me”, said Katia Moraes.

Recognized for her magnetic stage presence, Kátia has sung with international stars like Oscar Castro Neves, Sergio Mendes and Airto Moreira. With a large and eclectic repertoire that runs the gamut from pop to traditional samba and jazz, Moraes has created and performed with innumerable groups in Los Angeles.  Her three previous “Celebration shows” were dedicated to three marvelous Brazilian singers, Elis Regina (2012), Clara Nunes (2013) and Maria Bethânia (2014).

The 4th Celebration will pay homage to one of the inventors of the modern samba, a poetic genius who succumbed to tuberculosis at 26 but who lives on wherever samba is sung, at Beyond Baroque, located at 681 Venice Blvd, Venice, CA 90291 (Los Angeles), Sunday, September 20. Two shows: at 6:30pm and 8.00pm, and all ages. Tickets are $25 (Limited Seating) and can be purchased on the day of the show at the location (if not sold out) or online at https://www.cali4fun.net/events/86/en/1/
