Located in the “Hicksaw of Sea” State Park, in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, the “Paths of the Sea” trail — which takes Brazil’s environmental, historical and cultural heritage — offers self-guided tours, that is, individual visits, previously prohibited at the spot, since February 2nd. The 9km hike, one way, now counts with environmental guides in the eight historic monuments built there in 1922, to commemorate the Independence of Brazil’s centenary.
The tour is for those who already have experience with trails and physical resistance, as it lasts, on average, five hours. Tourists and visitors might carry in their backpack: water, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, towel, camera, binoculars and other personal materials that are strictly necessary. To protect yourself, it is interesting to go with a cap and pants made of light fabrics and, if you prefer, shirts with UV protection.
Visitations are open to 100 people at a time on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, every half hour, from 8 am to 11:30 am. A monitor will be at each point of interest and will explain the historical importance of that location. Each group will proceed on their own to the next point of interest, where they will receive guidance from another guide.
The eight monuments were listed in the 1970s by the Condephaat (Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage) and, thanks to the natural and historical wealth, the area was declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Organization, the Science and Culture) as an Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve.
