Joseph Le Page transformed his spiritual search into a global method: Integrative Yoga Therapy.

Californian Joseph Le Page, with training in Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Education, realized a lifelong dream through his spiritual journey. After years of study and questioning—including time at the renowned Kripalu Yoga Center—he and his wife Lilian founded the Enchanted Mountain Yoga Center in Garopaba, on the coast of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

The center is home to Integrative Yoga Therapy, a method he has been developing for more than a decade. This approach offers Yoga as a vehicle for the integration of all aspects of the human being: physical, mental, emotional, energetic, and spiritual.

It presents the practical knowledge of Yoga in an accessible, clear, and non-dogmatic format, embracing all styles as instruments of well-being, self-knowledge, and fulfillment.

How It All Began: Discovering Yoga in the 1970s

Why did you decide to practice yoga?

Le Page explains that his generation embraced Yoga during a time of global transformation. In the 1970s, California became a hub of social change and self-discovery, where Eastern philosophies began influencing Western lifestyles.

In 1972, he was introduced to Yoga—not just as an exercise, but as a way of life.

What Yoga Truly Means

For Le Page, Yoga is a path to understanding life itself.

He describes four essential pillars:

  • A vision of life
  • A spiritual path
  • A set of tools and techniques
  • The experience of freedom

These pillars work together to deepen our understanding of who we are.

A Personal Search for Meaning

Yoga began as a way for him to answer a central question: “Who am I?”

Coming from a dysfunctional family and a rigid Catholic upbringing, he left home at 18 seeking answers about suffering and existence. His journey led him to study Buddhism, anthropology, and travel to India in 1974.

Unlike others who followed a single guru, Le Page chose a path of continuous exploration and questioning—a journey that ultimately brought him peace and happiness.

Why Brazil? A Life-Changing Decision

After marrying Lilian, the couple initially planned to live in Santa Barbara, California. However, a visit to Garopaba changed everything.

They discovered the land where their center now stands and immediately felt it was the ideal place to settle.

Garopaba reminded them of Santa Barbara, but with key differences:

  • Lower cost of living
  • Lush natural environment
  • No summer fog

Today, they live in Brazil and travel to California once or twice a year to teach and surf.

Yoga in Brazil vs. the United States

Le Page highlights cultural differences in Yoga practice:

  • In the U.S., Yoga tends to be more competitive and focused on physical performance
  • In Brazil, practitioners are more inclined toward surrender and adaptability

He notes that Americans often emphasize external aspects, while Brazilians are more open to inner experience, despite challenges in professional organization within the field.

The Popularization of Yoga: Risks and Opportunities

With growing media attention, Yoga faces a critical moment:

Will it become just a trend, or remain a spiritual path?

Le Page warns against reducing Yoga to mere physical exercise, emphasizing its role as a path toward freedom and conscious living, beyond consumerism and status.

What Makes a Good Yoga Teacher?

A qualified Yoga teacher must understand all dimensions of the human being:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Energetic
  • Spiritual

Focusing on only one dimension can create imbalances.

He also cautions that professionals from athletic backgrounds may need re-education, as Yoga goes beyond the physical body.

Practicing Yoga Safely

Most beginners start with asanas (physical postures), but caution is essential.

Le Page explains:

  • Vigorous, athletic Yoga can increase injury risk
  • Flexibility gained through heat may stress joints and muscles
  • Traditional Yoga includes a holistic context, not just movement

Without this broader perspective, practitioners are more likely to face long-term issues.

Programs at Enchanted Mountain Yoga Center

The center offers:

  • Yoga teacher training programs (English and Portuguese)
  • Yoga retreats for international groups
  • Activities combining classes, workshops, and الطبي natural experiences

Participants can explore some of the most beautiful beaches and mountains in Brazil.
