He was born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, where his musical career started. Ney was part of Olodum, the socio-cultural project that has become a worldwide sensation and has had its recognition with a Grammy nomination and millions of fans around the world. In 2005, Ney came to the United States to present on Afro-Brazilian culture and music to U.S. College students. So he landed in Los Angeles, the city where already was living his brother Fabio Jahgun.

Since then, he has strived to bring authentic Bahian music to audiences in California and beyond; performing with other Brazilian musicians or solo with shows in Brazilian cultural celebrations at venues in Berkeley, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Some highlights of his musical career in the U.S include playing for Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson at the NAACP Awards at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium and singing with his former band, Olodum (U.S Tour) at the Ford Theater in Hollywood – www.facebook.com/ney.rios.71
