Located in South-Western Brazilian Amazon, the state of Acre has most of its territory covered by a thick rainforest, which combined with its wild rivers with fine clear sand makes it one of the greatest Ecotourism attraction of Brazil. Besides all its biodiversity, Acre is also the land of Chico Mendes and the “Forest people”. The forest shelters populations that for centuries have lived off its resources, such as the rubber and the Brazil nut.
The importance of this forest to its people has caused fights as the one led by the rubber tapper Chico Mendes, killed in 1988 in Xapuri. He fought for the rights of the so called “Forest people”, and became internationally renowned as a symbol of the struggle to preserve the environment, and his hometown, Xapuri, the country’s capital of ecological conscience.
Rio Branco, its capital, is a peculiar city, not only by its multicultural population with different beliefs and customs, but also by its architecture with modern and old characteristics, reflected in its squares, museums, palaces and parks. One of the main highlights of Acre is the rubber tree plantations next to Xapuri, as Chico Mendes Extractive reserve and the Pimenteira and Cachoeira plantations, where it’s possible to experience the life in the rainforest and the daily routine of the rubber-tappers.
When it comes to Ecotourism, the Juruá Valley is one of the main regions in terms of Biodiversity. Its highlights are the Serra do Divisor National Park, located at the border with Peru, and the lands inhabited by the Ashaninka Indian community. Other attractions of the state are the flights over the Geoglyphs; visits to the Flor de Lótus community – Saint Daime; native handicraft, as well as the Folkloric festivals, such as the Yawa Festival. In the state of Acre you will find natural beauty as well as adventure-tribal-conscious-eco-tourism.
