It is with great sadness that we inform our readers and friends that the annual event celebrating Brazil’s Independence Day in San Diego and a reference throughout the United States, usually held on the second Sunday in September, has been postponed and will not take place in 2018, coming back in 2019. Below is the official letter from the founder and producer Paulo Batuta in the form of a statement to the community:
“Dear friends, sponsors, donors, partners, artists, staff and, volunteers,
I’m writing to inform all of you that the Brazilian Day San Diego Festival for 2018 has been postponed. We hope to return in 2019. The main reason for this break is because of my family. Staying at home full time to take care of my 2 years old son and my 1 year old daughter, is my most important job. As producer and director of the Brazilian Day, and the president of Brazilian Institute for Arts and Culture (BIAC), the non-profit organization that hosts the event, it has become more challenging for me to perform all my tasks efficiently.
We have been seeking greater funding, and more personnel to spearhead the event, but have not yet secured a budget that can support it to take place this September. For ten years, this wonderful event has brought hundreds of thousands of people together to celebrate the arts and culture of Brazil. We are sincerely grateful to all who have participated, and supported this festival: our sponsors, donors, partners, funding from the city and county of San Diego, the artists, the vendors, the staff, the volunteers, and of course the community that comes out every year to have fun and celebrate the spirit of Brazil right here in San Diego.
In the meantime, as we prepare for the 2019 Brazilian Festival, BIAC will continue to serve the community with our mission, through programs such as capoeira classes, and community performances. The BIAC is open for any suggestions you may have to further the mission of our organization and/or the Brazilian Day Festival.
For ten years the Brazilian Day Festival has made its mark here in San Diego, and it will continue to do so, for many more years to come”.
Thank you,
Paulo Batuta.
